To miss or not to ms.

What's the difference between Ms. and Miss? Pronunciation wise, I mean, I spent a year in the US, but it still puzzles me every time I read Anita Blake and she corrects some one by saying it's ms, not miss.

To me, they should sound the same. What am I missing?
