Anita Blake bunny
Apr. 16th, 2005 10:37 pmSo, I've been visited by a very demanding Anita Blake plot bunny. It's actually two stories, one crosses with Buffy and a sequel that crosses with Xena. But before I begin, I need all the information I can on Anita's family and hometown years. I've surfed the net, but most sites focus on the monsters or have mistakes that makes me weary to trust anything on them.
I have so many questions that I need answering before I begin to outline the stories properly. Is Josh Anita's step or half brother? The same for Judith's 'perfect daughter'(Can't remember her name atm), is she a step or a half? Where did Anita grow up? Any name mentioned for her father? And so on and so on... Does anyone have a clue? Erin?
I've begun to reread the books, just looking for mentions of Anita's upbringing, and after going through half of Guilty Pleasure I actually thought to my self, at least the later books are so filled with sex scenes, I can just skip over several pages at once. I think that was among the most positive I've ever thought about Incubus Dreams.
Maybe I should't care about canon so much. LKH doesn't seem to.

Date: 2005-04-18 12:25 am (UTC)She's half hispanic on her mother's side, half white on her dad's, but she wasn't raised hispanic and she doesn't think of herself as anything other than white. She was raised catholic, I believe, but while she does believe in God, Jesus, etc., she isn't a bible-belt sort.
Her mother died when she was very young, in a car wreck, which has really affected Anita for years -- she makes it a point to wear a seatbelt. Her step mother was never comfortable with having a "halfbreed" daughter and made a point of never mentioning Anita's heritage.
Anita had a fiancee in college and he was her first sexual encounter. However, when his parents found out she was half hispanic, they disapproved and he dumped her. That's greatly affected her as well, making her wary of having new relationships and refusing to have sex until marriage (a very midwestern, middle class point of view, btw -- the fact that she had sex at all outside of marriage makes her think less of herself, and frankly, anyone from her socio-economic background will also think less of her; although no one will say it these days it's what "good girls" think of it).
Of course by, what, the sixth book, I think? She's dumped her midwestern morals and she's screwing anything that moves every other page. Continuity? What's that? *teeth grind*
You've caught me out on Josh and the "perfect daughter." I think that the daughter is Anita's half-sister by her father and step-mother. In fact, now that I think about it, I'm certain of it. Josh, though, I have no idea. I know Anita was the only child by her real mother and her father, so he'd have to be either her step or half brother. Sorry I can't be more help there.
Here's a website for St. Louis which might help you on locations, etc. I can help you out on general midwestern culture, morals, what we say vs. what we're really thinking, etc. I always found it interesting that Anita and I came from exactly the same city, culture, background, etc., and for so many books I could identify with her -- and then she turned into Super Slut and I just roll my eyes whenever I read yet another ill-described, utterly unarousing sex scene.
Wait, just found this: Anita Blake Character Guide
Her family consists of her Stepmother Judith who she does not get along with and her step-brother Josh who thinks she is cool. She is Mexican on her mother's side and German on her father's. She lost her mother in a car accident and is now very passionate about using seat belts.
She is Episcopalian since the Pope excommunicated all Animators from the Catholic Church.
That's about all I can find at the moment. Let me know if there's anything in particular you were looking for (other than the names). The books were kind of...eh after the fifth one, but after reading them all in a couple days, I seem to have absorbed more than I thought.
