I'm always the last to try something new...

I've imported my LJ to Dreamwidth just so I'll have a back up. And now, I'm experimenting with crossposting. I feel so 2009! :P

Writer's Block: Bah Humbug Day!

[Error: unknown template qotd]I want my old comment pages back. :( Without threads and subject lines, you're killing basically all communities I read. :(

I've had issues with LJ before, but then it have mostely been about principles, the black outs, the customer service and such. This is the first time there's been a change that makes the practical side of LJ so much worse than other journal sites. The way LJ is now makes it impractical for me to use.

Happy Lucia to you all!

Lucia herself arrives at 05:30, but the Lucia train is worth watching from the beginning. This is the start of christmas for me. :)

And another goat bites the dust...

No, I'm not talking about Frank the LJ mascot. ;P

The giant 13 metre tall Christmas goat (Gävlebocken) in the main square of Gävle, on the east coast of Sweden went up in flames early Friday morning after an attack by unknown assailants.

The poor thing didn't last a week this year. :)

The giant straw goat, which has been erected in the town's main square every year since 1966, undergoes a battle against the elements and local arsonists every year, which splits loyalties in the town.

Half of the inhabitants take pride in the giant animal, while the other half take equal pride in attempting to burn it down.

I wonder if they'll raise another one since this one didn't last to Lucia (December 13th)?

BAD Internet Laws Heading Your Way

Website Blocking

The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users

It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet

Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

Read this analysis from

Get on the phone and call your representative. Express your disapproval. Tell him or her exactly how you feel, and that you don't support this. Tell your friends to call their representatives, their Congressperson, and complain. Mention that you are a registered voter that takes your civic responsibility seriously and that you will use that vote to express your feelings about this.

“We support the bill’s stated goals — providing additional enforcement tools to combat foreign ‘rogue’ websites that are dedicated to copyright infringement or counterfeiting,” the Internet companies wrote in Tuesday’s letter. “Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action and technology mandates that would require monitoring of websites.”  The chamber-led coalition in support of the bill includes Walmart, Eli Lilly & Co. and Netflix.

Google and other opponents of the legislation argue that restricting the Internet in the U.S. sets a bad international precedent and that the language defines infringing too broadly.

I'm a bad fangirl

I can't believe I didn't realize exactly who astolat is until the whole OTW debacle.

BTW, big hugs to anyone involved with AO3 or OTW. I find you all awesome and hope that the end result of the election, no matter who gets voted in, will be that the problems people have brought up to the surface will be attended to. The more I read about the things volunteers do to keep the archive running, the more in awe I am.

So it's a new DDoS attack. :(

We can now publicly disclose that we have been experiencing a large-scale DDoS attack the last two days, which has been the reason for the site issues most users have been experiencing. The traffic load has been immense, at many times our normal load level, and the attack is still on-going. We are in constant contact with our providers to mitigate the attack as best as possible. We again apologize for the disruption to LiveJournal usage, and are working to get everything back to normal as soon as we can. Thank you!

I've missed you, LJ!

Btw, I can be patient about downtime. I hope it wasn't another attack, but seriously lj, you put up a post on facebook about a haiku contest during the down time, but couldn't bother with a status update? Bad form! Not all of us are on twitter. :(

84 confirmed deaths at the youth camp at Utöja. The shooter was dressed as a cop. People jumped into the water, trying to swim to the mainland to get away from him. He opened fire out over the water too. When the real cops came to the island, survivors begged them to put down their guns to prove that they weren't with the killer. I can't imagine the horror that took place there.

At a youth camp for the norwegian labour party.

He killed teenagers.

Probably because he didn't like their politics.

I'm numb.

My heart goes out to all norwegians. I'm praying for all the people still missing in Oslo, and for all the paniced youths at Utöja.

There's a shark in fandom water!

If you own an archive or post your fic at an archive be aware there's a shark out there.

Keith Mander just bought and here's his business strategy: (Quoted from [ profile] esteliel 's post here

"My approach would be to directly contact site owners who are unaware of their site’s value and who’ve never experimented with online advertising. They’re usually surprised when you contact them with an offer and this eases the negotiation process. The potential with this approach is far greater.
Using information on popular search keywords is a good starting point. I think it’s wise to concentrate on topics that are not immediately commercial in nature as you’re more likely to discover a site created out of passion, rather than for profit. "

[ profile] esteliel have done some research on the guy and here's lovely quote from his blog about his intentions:

" is a fan fiction archive, just like (another site I snapped up a couple of months ago).

The thinking is that I can leverage the technology behind the Twilight site’s redesign to quickly rejuvenate the LOTR site. Plus, plenty of opportunities for cross promotion and integration (SSO, for example). The longer term thought is that with the combined user base, I’ll be able to quickly enter and dominate new fandoms, hopefully creating some returns

Please go to and [ profile] joyful_molly 's post here and read up on this guy. Today it's Twilight and LOTR, who know's what fandom archive he'll try to buy next. :(

I bet the norwegian in charge of the voting in Eurovision made sure that Sweden was read last, just to mess with us. :P
